SUSTAINABLE WASTE SYMPOSIUM ON ACHIEVING SUSTAINABLE WASTE MANAGEMENT IN DEVELOPING COUNTRIES

In developing countries such as Nigeria, the challenges associated with waste management are often multi-dimensional and as such require new perspectives, energy and resources. Having identified this, Cranfield University and West Africa Energy is set to host over 100 participants for a 2-day Waste Symposium at the Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Lagos State, Nigeria on 25th – 26th July, 2019.


The symposium is themed ‘Achieving sustainable waste management and energy from waste in developing countries’ and aims to bring together experts working in the waste and resource management, energy production and environmental engineering sectors from industry, financial services, academia and government organisations.


Cranfield University is a postgraduate UK university with focus on research and a mission to create leaders in technology and management, unlocking the potential of people and organisations by partnering with business and governments to deliver transformational research, postgraduate education and professional development.


West Africa Energy is a private landfill diversion company in Nigeria with a mission to achieve zero-waste-to-landfills in the communities, transforming cities and providing innovative solutions. The company owns Nigeria’s first Materials Recovery Facility (MRF) situated at Alimisho, Lagos State, where valuable fractions are recovered from municipal waste and put back directly into the production economy as feedstock for plastic, metal and paper recycling.

The Executive Governor of Lagos State, His Excellency Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu, is expected to be at the event. Other top players in Nigeria’s waste management sector such as Mr Ola Oresanya (MD, LAWMA), Mr Olugbenga Adebola (MD, Richbol Environmental Services), Mr Taiwo Adewole (MD, Taiwo Adewole and Associates), Mr Paul Callaghan (COE, West Africa Energy), Mr Ms Lolade Oresanwo (COO, West Africa Energy), and Ms Adesuwa Obasuyi (ED, Sustainable African Cities and Communities Initiative) will be making presentations.


Prof Phil Longhurst, Dr Stuart Wagland, Mr Adesola Okunoren, Ms Bunmi Sangosanya, Mr Abraham Williams, and Ms Omolola Kafi, from Cranfield University are also expected to be present at the event as speakers.


Other speakers are Ms Abiola Kosegbe (Nigerian Institute of Environmental Engineers), Mr Saurabh Srivastava (Nigeria Infrastructure Debt Fund), Mr Daniel Adedokun (Geocycle), Mr Martins Arogie (KPMG), and so on.


Some key topics to be addressed at the waste management symposium include: 'Roles for the Informal Sector', 'Building Blocks of a Sustainable Waste Management System', 'Energy from Waste for Nigeria', Waste Processing, Innovations and Operations', Energy from Waste Technologies' and more.


It is expected that at the waste symposium, participants will look at creative solutions and opportunities in waste management with a view to diverting more waste from landfills, reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and addressing the challenges of developing sustainable waste management and energy from waste in Africa.
